Pontefract Collieries saw their play-off push take a setback as Lincoln United produced a strong second-half display to run out 4–1 winners in West Yorkshire.
The first half was a cagey affair, with neither side able to establish control or create clear cut opportunities. Both teams battled for midfield dominance, but chances were at a premium in a largely scrappy opening 45 minutes.
After an injury delay following an innocuous injury to a Lincoln player, six minutes of added time were played at the end of the half — and it was the Colls who took full advantage. A well-timed flick on by Michael Coulson released Joe Lumsden, who showed great composure to round the goalkeeper and slot home, giving Ponte a valuable lead heading into the break.
The second half burst into life almost immediately. Pontefract came within inches of doubling their advantage early on, only to be punished moments later. Lincoln broke forward and, after an initial save from Harry Christy, Kane Hutchinson-Wilkes was on hand to head home the rebound and level the scores.
The momentum quickly swung in the visitors’ favour, and just a minute later they took the lead. Charlie Carlisle found space after neat play and fired a low effort into the net to turn the game on its head.
Ponte looked to respond and felt they should have been awarded a penalty following a strong appeal inside the box, but the referee waved away the protests — much to the frustration of the home side as Alex Pavan was clearly pulled back when there to tap in.
As the game wore on, Lincoln grew in confidence and capitalised on the spaces left as Ponte pushed forward. Haydn Havard extended the lead finishing from close range at a corner, before Connor Brown added a fourth with a well taken curling effort to seal an emphatic victory.
It was a difficult afternoon for the Colls, who will be disappointed they couldn’t kick on after taking the lead but they were ultimately punished by a clinical Lincoln side after the break. The focus now turns to Monday at Garforth, as Ponte look to respond and keep their play-off push rolling.
