Colls Respond in Style with Derby Win at Garforth

Pontefract Collieries produced the perfect response to Saturday’s disappointment, securing a hard fought 1–0 victory away at Garforth Town on Easter Monday to maintain their place in the play-off positions.

On a glorious afternoon in West Yorkshire, both sides entered the derby looking to bounce back from defeats, and it showed in a scrappy, tough opening. The early exchanges were tight, with neither side able to create clear openings as the game became a battle for territory and control.

The first half arguably edged in favour of the hosts, though their efforts were largely restricted to shots from distance. Harry Christy remained relatively untested, dealing comfortably with anything that came his way.

As the half wore on, the Colls began to grow into the contest. A sustained spell of pressure in the Garforth half saw Alex Pavan create an opening for Niah Payne, but his effort was well blocked as the sides went in level at the break.

With the slope now in their favour, Pontefract started the second half brightly and soon found the breakthrough. Ten minutes after the restart, Elliott Walker delivered a dangerous inswinging corner from the left, and Simon Jakab rose superbly to glance his header into the net in front of the travelling supporters.

The goal injected confidence into the visitors, who looked composed both in and out of possession. As the half progressed, both managers turned to their benches in search of an impact, but it was Ponte who remained the more organised and resilient side.

Garforth pushed late on in search of an equaliser, and came closest in added time when Rinor Ejupi’s free-kick was heading towards the top corner, only for Christy to produce a calm and assured save to tip it over the bar.

That proved to be the final action of the contest as the referee’s whistle confirmed a vital three points for the Colls — a result that keeps them firmly in the play off hunt with just three games remaining.

Player of the Match: Simon Jakab- A commanding performance at the heart of the defence, dominant in the air and on the ground — and capped off with the decisive header to win the game.
