Match Report: Yorkshire Amateurs 1-0 Ponte Colls (20/11/21 – NPL East)

The Colls fell to a second to back to back defeats on Saturday, as Adam Priestley’s goal ten minutes from time was enough to claim all three points for Yorkshire Amateurs. In a closely contested West Yorkshire Derby the hosts scored the only goal of the game, but for large parts were put onto the back foot by The Colls.

The game got off to a scrappy start with neither side creating anything of note in the early exchanges. The first chance of the half went the way of Ponte’s, a fast break from Joao Rangel saw The Colls with a 3 v 2. The ball found its way to Rob Guilfoyle but his cross evaded everyone.

Yorkshire Amateurs then had a great chance of their own. Ponte gave the ball away on the edge of their box and a through ball put away the Ammers man, but his lobbed effort just drifted passed the post.

Guilfoyle was again involved in a Ponte counter, he was slipped away down the right hand side and looked to find Luke Hinsley in the box and was inches away from converting. As time ran out in the first half Ponte were denied what seemed to be a certain penalty. Spencer Clarke’s header down to Jack Shepherd was brought under control, before the Yorkshire Amateurs man was deemed to ‘not’ trip Shepherd.

At the break the sides went in at 0-0. A relatively even half but Ponte felt the game was there for them in the second half.

That was how the second half began, Ponte came out with wind in their sails and were pushing the hosts back into their own final third. Chances came and went with little trouble on the Ammers goal.

As time wore on and Ponte continued to throw bodies forward, it was our hosts who took the lead against the run of play. A break down the left saw former player Ben Gordon get to the box before cutting back to Gibraltar international Adam Priestley, his finish was perfectly in off the inside of the post.

Ponte pushed for a late equaliser and came close twice throw Jack Shepherd as the defence threw their bodies on the line. Ponte were again denied a penalty as Rob Guilfoyle got himself the right side before being bundled over in the box, again nothing given as the protests were waved away.

Yorkshire Amateurs were able to hold on for a vital three points and the defeat puts Ponte third from bottom. Our luck in the first half of the season must mean we are due a whole lot more in the second half of it!
