Match Preview – Ossett United (14.08.21)

Match Day One is almost upon us, we will take a closer look at this mouthwatering opening day fixture between two West Yorkshire sides. This Saturday at 3pm, will see both sides get their seasons off to a good start. Colls and Ossett struggled in last years’ curtailed season and will look to see improvements this year.

The two squads have seen a number of changes since we last met, with the Ossett and Ponte sides seeing a number of changes. Including Craig Rouse as assistant manager for The Colls in the last meeting.

Head to Head records have been in Ponte’s favour since our first meeting in 2018, where Mikey Dunn scored with five minutes remaining to snatch victory. In the reverse fixture that season, former Colls Manager Andy Monkhouse scored a 90th minute leveler to steal a point from the jaws of defeat. The two met again in the play offs with the Collieries hosting. Extra time was needed after The Colls came from behind to draw the tie in 90 minutes. A Mikey Dunn special and a Jimmy Williams wonder goal sealed the tie.

Ossett got their own back somewhat in the League Cup, they scored two late goals to go through. But Ponte returned to fine form against our West Yorkshire rivals with a Boxing Day (2019) with a 2-0 away win where Jack Greenhough and James Baxendale scored the goals.

Ossett is a market town within the metropolitan district of the City of Wakefield, in West Yorkshire, England. The town is roughly halfway between the west and east coasts of England. Ossett derives from the Anglo Saxon and is either “the fold of a man named Osla” or ” a fold frequented by blackbirds”. Ossett is now the largest town in Yorkshire and one of the largest towns in Britain without a railway station.
