Match Preview: Bishop Auckland (21/02/25)

Pontefract Collieries make the trip to County Durham this weekend to face Bishop Auckland, with both sides aiming to return to winning ways — but for very different reasons. The hosts are looking to pull clear of the bottom four, while Colls are focused on keeping pace in the play-off chase.

Ponte come into the fixture in solid form and currently sit fourth in the form guide, extending an unbeaten run that stretches back to the end of November. Jimmy Williams’ side have taken 14 points from their last six games, underlining the consistency that has kept them firmly in the mix.

Last time out, Colls showed real character in coming from 2–0 down to draw at home to Bridlington Town. The comeback demonstrated plenty of character and resilience — qualities that will be needed again on the road this weekend.

Bishop Auckland, meanwhile, were beaten narrowly away at Lincoln United in their last outing, losing by a single goal in what was a tight encounter. Prior to that, they had been grinding out points, including an impressive 2-0 win over Heaton Stannington. However, that was their only win in their last five matches and have drawn against Yorkshire opposition in Brighouse, Silsden and Ossett during that spell.

The reverse fixture earlier this season was played at Ponte’s temporary home at Ingfield (Ossett United). On that occasion, Bishop Auckland ran out 3–1 winners, with Colls scoring a late consolation after the visitors had already taken control of the game. A result that put an end to a tough run of fixture for the North East side, it was a frustrating evening for Ponte and one they will be keen to put right this weekend.

With the play-off race tightening, every point matters for Colls as they look to apply pressure to the sides above them. For Bishop Auckland, the priority is creating breathing space between themselves and the bottom four. A trip north and a big three points up for grabs. Safe travels to everyone making the journey to County Durham.
