Emley clinical in big win

Pontefract Collieries endured a difficult afternoon as they fell to a 4–0 defeat away at local rivals Emley AFC, despite moments where the side threatened to shift the momentum.

Emley made the brighter start and took the lead after just 10 minutes, capitalising on a loose ball in the box which Gabriel Johnson tucked into the bottom corner.

The hosts continued to apply pressure, and by the quarter-hour mark Pontefract were forced to absorb sustained spells of possession.

A key moment arrived in the 18th minute when Pontefract nearly found an equaliser – a low, driven cross caused chaos in the Emley defence and a deflection diverted the ball onto the post, agonisingly close to levelling the match.

However, Emley doubled their lead shortly before the half-hour mark as Jack Cowgill met a corner with a strong header to make it 2–0. Then, just before the break, an unstoppable strike from Thompson — crashing in off the crossbar from the edge of the box — sent Pontefract into halftime trailing 3–0.

The second half saw Pontefract show better organisation and resilience, limiting Emley’s chances and looking to threaten on the break.

But with the hosts comfortable and managing the tempo, opportunities remained limited. Emley added a fourth late on in the 84th minute when a counter-attack ended with Ceesay finishing in at the back post.

Full-time: Emley AFC 4–0 Pontefract Collieries

A frustrating result for Pontefract, who battled throughout but were undone by clinical finishing from their rivals and a slow start that proved too much to overcome.
