Pontefract Collieries produced a ruthless attacking display to sweep aside Consett AFC on Non League Day, strengthening their push for the play-offs with an emphatic away victory in County Durham.
With three new signings available, Sam Kay and Michael Coulson were handed immediate debuts as Jimmy Williams looked to freshen things up following last week’s draw. Conditions were typically challenging at Consett, with a swirling wind playing its part throughout, and Ponte began the game facing into it.
The hosts applied some early pressure, but it was the Colls who struck first in unusual fashion. A long clearance from Harry Spratt was caught in the wind, causing confusion between the Consett defence and goalkeeper. Coulson reacted quickest, squaring for Joe Lumsden to calmly roll home the opener.
Ponte soon doubled their lead. A Jack Greenhough long throw wasn’t dealt with, and when Coulson helped the ball into Lumsden’s path, the striker fired a superb low volley into the bottom corner for his second.
Despite the conditions, Harry Christy remained relatively untroubled, making a couple of smart stops when required. At the other end, Ponte continued to press and added a third before the break. A well-worked move saw Spratt release Niah Payne down the left, who picked out Kay, and he in turn found Coulson — the forward finishing confidently at the near post.
Leading 3–0 at half-time and now with the wind behind them, the Colls were in full control — and they showed it early in the second half. Just seven minutes after the restart, Coulson won possession high up the pitch before Alfie Perry delivered a perfectly weighted ball over the top. Lumsden raced onto it and coolly slotted into the far corner to complete his hat-trick.
The visitors continued to dominate, with Ben Middleton going close to a spectacular goal from inside his own half, while Greenhough and Frankie Sinfield also threatened to add to the scoreline.
Consett did manage a late consolation when Ben Ramsey broke the offside trap and finished well, but it did little to take the shine off a commanding performance from Pontefract.
Another away win and just one defeat in seventeen games highlights the Colls’ consistency, as they continue to strengthen their position in the play-off places.
Player of the Match: Joe Lumsden – A clinical display from the striker, who grabbed a superb hat-trick in just 61 minutes and led the line with energy and intent from the first whistle.
