Colls Claim New Year’s Bragging Rights in Derby Win

Pontefract Collieries kicked off the New Year in the perfect fashion, claiming local bragging rights with a hard-fought 2–0 victory over Garforth Town in a competitive West Yorkshire derby.

The opening half was shaped by strong wind conditions, with Garforth switched the team around before kick off – looking to take advantage and pin Colls back. Despite plenty of endeavour from both sides, clear-cut chances were limited as the two teams battled for control in midfield without either goalkeeper being seriously tested.

After the break, the momentum shifted. With the wind now at their backs, Jimmy Williams’ men took control of possession and began to dictate the tempo of the contest. The breakthrough arrived on 68 minutes following a drop ball that led to a floated delivery into the Garforth penalty area. The clearance fell short and Ben Middleton showed great desire, rising to guide a header into the corner and spark celebrations among the home support (attendance 656).

Pontefract sensed the opportunity to press home their advantage and continued to push forward. That pressure told when Joe Lumsden was fouled inside the box, resulting in a second yellow card and dismissal for the Garforth defender. Frankie Sinfield stepped up and calmly dispatched the resulting penalty to seal all three points.

The victory moves Colls up to sixth place and marks a third straight win to start 2026 on a positive note.

Player of the Match: Jack Greenhough — a true captain’s performance, dominant defensively, strong in the air and instrumental in driving the side forward throughout the afternoon.
