Colls Beaten for the First Time Since November

Pontefract Collieries saw their impressive unbeaten run come to an end as Blyth Spartans claimed a 2–1 victory on a controversial evening in the North East.

The Colls made the 236-mile round trip after the original Saturday fixture was postponed, and it was the hosts who began on the front foot, buoyed by a lively home crowd. Ponte weathered the early pressure and gradually worked their way into the contest, settling into possession and beginning to ask questions of the Spartans defence.

The breakthrough came on 37 minutes. A pressured back pass fell invitingly for Joe Lumsden, who showed excellent composure to guide the ball into the net in front of the travelling Colls supporters.

Jimmy Williams’ side looked the more controlled outfit, but momentum shifted dramatically on the stroke of half-time. A penalty was awarded when a Blyth forward went to ground inside the area under what appeared minimal contact. Jamie Clark stepped up to convert, sending the sides in level at the break.

The sense of injustice deepened early in the second half. Frankie Sinfield appeared to be caught by a mistimed, lunging tackle from the full-back, yet the referee instead cautioned the Ponte forward for simulation. From the resulting free kick, Blyth worked the ball forward, a fierce volley was tipped onto the bar, and Paul Van-Zandvliet reacted quickest to tap home from close range.

With the hosts energised, Blyth enjoyed a strong spell of pressure. However, Ponte responded well, regaining composure and pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Payne, Sinfield and Wilson all created promising openings through positive wing play, but the final touch proved elusive.

Second-half substitute Alex Pavan nearly marked his debut in style, curling a long-range effort narrowly wide of the far post.

Despite late pressure, a comeback wasn’t to be. The home supporters celebrated loudly at full-time, while the Colls were left frustrated by key decisions as they made the long journey back to West Yorkshire.
