Pontefract Collieries and Ossett United shared the spoils at The Hunters Stadium in a hard-fought West Yorkshire derby, with both sides finding the net in the first half but unable to land a decisive blow after the break.
The Colls started brightly and dominated the opening exchanges, moving the ball well and asking early questions of the Ossett back line. Former Colls goalkeeper Aleks Petrovic was called into action on several occasions, producing three smart saves to deny Ponte’s forwards as the hosts looked to make their early pressure count.
Against the run of play, it was Ossett who struck first. A quick break caught Pontefract slightly open at the back, allowing Luca Bolino to race through and calmly roll the ball home to give the visitors the lead.
The response from Jimmy Williams’ side was immediate. A ball over the top caused confusion between the Ossett full-back and Petrovic, and Jack Boyle reacted quickest to the loose, bouncing ball, swivelling sharply to fire home the equaliser and restore parity.
The second half saw Pontefract push for a winner, enjoying more possession and territory, but Ossett stood firm and remained a threat on the counter. Both sides had spells of pressure, and Ponte felt they might have had a strong claim for a penalty when a cross appeared to strike an arm inside the box, though the referee waved play on.
Deep into stoppage time, the Colls came agonisingly close to snatching all three points. Nathan Modest lifted the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper, only for a recovering defender to produce a heroic goal-line clearance to deny a dramatic late winner.
In the end, it was a point apiece in a competitive derby encounter.
