Pontefract Collieries secured back to back victories with a hard fought 1–0 win away at Newton Aycliffe, with a first half penalty proving the difference in a true game of two halves in County Durham.
From the moment the teams arrived, it was clear the conditions would play a major role. A difficult surface combined with strong swirling winds made for a difficult evening for both sides.
Ponte began brightly and quickly looked to impose themselves on the contest. After creating a couple of early openings, the breakthrough came when Joe Lumsden was clumsily brought down inside the penalty area. Elliott Walker stepped up confidently and fired home from the spot, marking his first goal since returning to the club.
The Colls continued to dominate possession and territory during the remainder of the first half, moving the ball well and pinning the hosts back, though they were unable to test the goalkeeper further despite their control.
Leading 1–0 at the interval, Jimmy Williams’ men knew the contest was far from over — and the hosts proved that immediately after the restart. Newton Aycliffe came out with renewed intensity and created two huge chances within the opening ten minutes of the second half, but both opportunities went begging.
As the pressure grew, Harry Christy was called into action on several occasions, producing a number of important saves to keep the home side at bay. The Colls defence also played its part, with Ben Middleton making a crucial block inside the penalty area to deny what could have been an equaliser.
Ponte threatened on the counter and came close to extending their lead when Alex Pavan fired narrowly wide following a well-worked move. In the end it was defensive resilience that ensured the visitors saw out the closing stages, claiming another valuable three points that travel back down the A1 to West Yorkshire.
The result moves the Colls up to fourth in the table, albeit having played a game more than some of the sides around them.
Player of the Match: Harry Christy – A quiet first half but an excellent second-half display, producing several key saves to preserve the lead and secure the points.
