Pontefract Collieries proudly celebrated a landmark day on Sunday as the newly renovated Hunters Stadium was officially opened to the community. The event marked a significant step forward in the club’s long-term vision to enhance facilities, support grassroots football, and create a home that players, supporters, and the wider community can be proud of.
The day began with opening remarks from Vice Chairman Tom Wiles, before Graham Turner (Football Foundation, Delivery Manager) spoke about the importance of continued investment into community sport and the role Pontefract Collieries plays across the region. During the ceremony, the club also honoured Frank Burnley with a special surprise milestone award, recognising his 50 years of outstanding service. Frank’s dedication and commitment have been instrumental to the Colls family, and the acknowledgement was warmly received by all in attendance.
The redevelopment of our stadium has been a collaborative effort, supported by key partners whose contributions were essential to bringing the project to life. Our thanks go to:
• Football Foundation
• Premier League
• England Football
• Department for Culture, Media and Sport
• Local councillors
Plus many more organisations and individuals who played a part in this journey. Their support has helped transform the stadium into a modern, vibrant, and accessible space that will benefit generations of players and supporters.
Following the formalities, football took pride of place as Pontefract Collieries Women’s and Girls’ teams kicked off proceedings on the pitch. First our Ladies Reserves set the tone with an impressive 3–1 victory, before our Ladies First Team then faced strong, higher-league opposition in the County Cup. Despite a courageous performance, they exited the competition losing 1-2.
Bars and kitchen were open, supporters and club committee were in attendance, and the atmosphere reflected everything that makes Pontefract Collieries a special place! The official opening of the renovated Hunters Stadium stands as a milestone moment, but a reminder that this is just another step in continued growth for our Community Football Club.
