Colls Cup Comeback!

Pontefract Collieries produced a dramatic second-half comeback to defeat Clitheroe 2-1 at The Hunters Stadium and book their place in the next round of the FA Trophy.

The visitors took an early lead in controversial circumstances, after the Colls were convinced they should have been awarded a penalty when James Morris was brought down inside the box. Despite the home side’s protests, play continued and Clitheroe quickly broke forward, with Nathan Sandison producing a superb finish into the top-right corner to give the visitors the advantage.

The early goal failed to settle the contest, however, with neither side able to establish control as the game developed into an entertaining and competitive cup tie. With his side looking for a way back into the contest, Jimmy Williams made a triple substitution in the second half, introducing three fresh faces to change the momentum of the game. It proved to be an inspired decision.

Among those introduced was Jack Wilson, who needed just six minutes to make his mark. A long throw was delivered into the Clitheroe penalty area and, with the ball dropping at the far post, Wilson did enough to turn it goalwards, with his effort taking a deflection on its way into the net to restore parity.

The equaliser gave the Colls renewed belief and, as the second half progressed, the home side became the dominant force. Pontefract continued to apply pressure as they searched for a winner, with Clitheroe increasingly forced onto the back foot.

That pressure finally told deep into stoppage time. A free-kick was awarded within shooting range and Wilson stepped up to take responsibility. The substitute produced a moment of real quality, curling a stunning effort beyond the Clitheroe goalkeeper and into the net to send The Hunters Stadium into wild celebrations.

Player of the Match: Jack Wilson – Coming off the bench, Wilson made an immediate impact, scoring the equaliser within six minutes before producing a sensational stoppage-time free-kick to seal the victory.
